The Writing Rug
Concentration is a big hurdle for many writers; I am one of those. So many things interest, distract and thrill me that I must create the original manuscript face down on the rug, writing in long hand with no noise, no interruptions.
Morning is my most creative time. The ideal writing day starts with a spicy breakfast, TexMex style . . . . . eggs scrambled with poblano peppers, onion, chorizo sausage and pico de gallo. I linger over the finest coffee I can buy and discuss ideas for the next chapter with my husband. High quality caffeine and his feedback are what get the creative juices flowing.
The first revision comes when I type the new chapter into the computer at my writing desk. All of the rest of the work is done here. French doors lead to a third floor balcony where I can see the Laguna Madre and the island. . . . . clear my thoughts.
Family pictures crown the top of the armoire and remind me of how lucky I am, grateful I am to have these precious people in my life. I tuck inspirational thoughts written on sticky notes in the nooks and crannies of the desk. I love serendipity and always seem to discover them when I need them. Here are some I found today.
Do it first. The motivation comes.
“Take giant leaps and great forces will come to your aide.”
—Actor, Anthony HopkinsLife is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.
“I get excited when I fail. That means I learned something.”
—Inventor, James Dyson“You will make all kinds of mistakes, but as long as they are generous and true,
and also fierce, you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress it.”
—Leader, Winston Churchill
